helpful links

by Botimus » Fri Jul 12, 2002 1:33 pm

Hi there all, I had an idea for the thread so here it is.

Almost all of us know of a little site somewhere that can be a help or intrest to others. This is evident but the high number of links being thrown around in the main chat. So my idea was to start up a tread where we could post a link to anything we feel might help others in Iacon. Currently JasonLarabell is getting help from OptimismPrime for encoding and audio etc that Jason is playing around with. Lio has posted this message with a link for a program to grab streaming from the web: read.php?TID=240

So apart from all the TF sites that are well establised, do you know of a site/link that others may find worth while??

We share in the hub, but how about a mini database of sorts??

Take it easy all.
shhhhhh you didn't see me.

Also forgot to say, if you've got something online and were very happy with the cost and the service, then also post their link here. If we all buy from the best places then they might support our intrests more due to the damand. Worth a crack nigel.

As for links, everyone knows these I guess but it's worth a start:

www.epguides.com - a guide to eps
www.dslreports.com - you can do a test of your connection speed here
<img src=http://www.iaconhub.com/images/iaconbannersmall.png> - Iacon banner for fourms

etc etc, all the above links are from other ppl in the hub so I only know of them from otheres.

If you know any better ones or ones you would like to share then please feel free to add them.

Later
shhhhhh you didn't see me.

I know next to nothing about firewalls, less than nothing in fact, but found this one to be very good. Worth a try, better than nothing and free:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

**EDIT** Be wary of ZoneAlarm... It has known issues with a lot of ISP's and even when you uninstall it, it doesn't uninstall the "blocking" aspect of the firewall from your system... The way ZoneAlarm works is different then most firewalls, do research before making the decision of installing it. **END EDIT**

Sick of spyware building up on your PC? Didn't even know it was there? Then this little gem is for you. Use it how offen you want. Just be forewarned that Kazaa etc has spyware bundled with it so this will basically kill Kazaa. (Kazaa Lite has only one file that you can ignore. just do a scan b4 installing so you know which one to ignore):
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Can't get your Reg clean from old games/demos etc that seem to lurk there forever. Norton and the others playing it safe and not letting you wipe them? then use this at your own risk. If you know it's gone then this will let you wipe it. if your not sure.....leave it.
http://www.jv16.org/

Everyone has their fav and this is mine, increase the speed of your downloads from web pages with this, DAP or Download Accelerator Plus. Makes mirror links to the site to increase your speed to it's max potentual. Allows resumes etc. Not bad, and the price is perfect. Check it out here:
http://www.speedbit.com/DefaultT.asp?

Thats all for now.
Catch ya all later.

should of put this with the other, anyway...... this is a little proggie that frees up your RAM etc that is assingned to other programs that you closed ages ago but just won't let go. Easy to use, easy to set up. and it's free. what more could you ask for??

Sick of pop-up ads and the likes when surfing the web?? Can't stand the 'in your face' flashing lights? Then maybe this will be of use. A computer mag did a test on 4 Ad Blockers, but as only 2 were free I will list only those 2 along with the Pros & Cons. They are...

www.guidescope.com Pro - your not required to D/L newfiltering instructions
Con - remote proxy transmits your surfing habits to Guidescope (scary)
Blocks - Banners, Flash ads and Cookies.
Page Display - 1.9 times faster

www.webwasher.com Pro - sophisticated settings let you fine-tune the blockade; only product that prevented mouse-trapping.
Con - it's cookie blocking and management features couldn't do the job.
Blocks - Banners, Pop-ups, Flash ads and mouse trapping.
Page display - 1.5 times faster.

(NOTE: I have not tried either Ad Blocker software so can't comment personally. If you do have any problems with either program then contact the party involved.)

http://www.mozilla.org - If you want a better alternative to Internet Explorer then try Mozilla. It even has a built in popup blocker!

Ok, we all have a Virus Scanner, or rather, we all should these days. And thats all good and well....BUT....
Do you know what to do/ what happens when you have suffered an attack?

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

here you can download a dummy virus to test you Virus scanner against. If you know how your systems goning to react to a true virus, then you will be ready for if it does happen.

All is explained in the text, and then D/L the small file, there are 3 different types to chooses from.

ever here of trillian?
if not t is a must program, it is free and can be downloaded at www.trillian.com, or search for trillian at download.com. it integrates irc, icq, msn, aim, and yahoo into one instant messenger program. Really handy.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/code/33189.html

its a way of buying who you want for as little as you want!.

OK this might not help many of you, but it did me a world of good. Lots of info about every (I think) file sharing resource out there. For those of us that didn't grow up with newsgroups

...and two funny sites:

-- a classic news source

-- some girl that goes to school in Berkely, and posts bits of conversations that she overhears (but not in a stalker kind of way, in a funny way)
